Join us to celebrate the foster neighbors program
in honor of Kyle Forti
You might have heard about the tragic passing of beloved Coloradan Kyle Forti in a helicopter crash this past March.
Kyle loved adventures. Friends at his memorial service noted that he “lived more life in 29 years than most will in 80.” But more than traveling & making business deals, Kyle loved his family. He loved home, sharing responsibilities with his wife, planning to be a stay-at-home dad.
He did this not only for their young son & baby on the way, but also for children in foster care, children who never knew a consistent father-figure before Kyle.
HE LOVED OFFERING A TASTE OF PEACEFUL CHILDHOODS, AND WANTED TO WELCOME MORE CHILDREN IN THE DECADES HE imagined AHEAD.
In their seven years of marriage, Kyle and his wife, Hope, were foster parents to four children, newborn to 12 years old.
Leading voices in the Colorado foster parent community, the State of Colorado recognized Kyle and Hope as exemplary caregivers in 2017.
As they grew their friendships with other foster parents, Kyle and Hope noticed that many burn out and quit, due to lack of community support.
Facing the stressors themselves, Kyle and Hope knew that ultimately, high foster parent turnover hurts kids. Fostering is a developed skill, and when homes go unsupported, children suffer from instability & disruption.
TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM, KYLE AND HOPE STARTED A 501 (C)(3), FOSTER TOGETHER COLORADO, IN JANUARY 2018.
The goal? To bring back “the art of neighborliness:” simple, friendly tasks that make raising children “in the system” do-able.
Simplicity is the key to the program’s early success: volunteer “Foster Neighbors” begin with an easy monthly task, and often become an extended family for the family.
The foster family receives support:
respite child care or babysitting
friendly, non-judgmental support when things are difficult
FOSTER TOGETHER’S CORE PROGRAM, "FOSTER NEIGHBORS", WILL RECRUIT AND TRAIN 400 VOLUNTEERS IN COLORADO AND CALIFORNIA TO PROVIDE PRACTICAL SUPPORT.
It costs between $250-$500 to recruit, train and mentor a volunteer for a year.
